May is when the city feels effortless

Spring energy, longer daylight, and comfortable evenings make May one of the best months to visit. Plan the trip around walking routes and parks, then add one cultural anchor and one day trip if desired.

What May feels like: weather & light

Temperatures

May is widely considered one of the two best months to visit Bucharest (alongside September). Daytime highs are warm but comfortable — averaging around the low 20s°C and climbing toward the mid-20s by late month — while nights are mild at roughly 10°C. It is reliable terrace-and-walking weather without the heavy, sometimes oppressive heat that arrives in July and August.

Daylight & light

Long days and late, golden sunsets are one of May's great pleasures: there is ample daylight for full days outdoors, and the soft evening light makes Calea Victoriei, the parks and the Old Town passages glow well into the evening. It is the easiest month of the year for relaxed, unhurried itineraries.

Rain & green

May is greener and a touch wetter than the early-spring months — late-spring showers and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm are possible — but they tend to pass quickly and rarely derail a day. The parks and gardens are at their lush, vivid peak, which is the trade-off for the odd shower. A light, packable rain layer is all you need.

Crowds & prices

As prime season, May is busier and a little pricier than the shoulder months, though still well short of high-summer peak. Weekends, the early-May public-holiday period and any festival dates draw the biggest crowds, so book accommodation and standout restaurants ahead — but the city rarely feels overwhelmed the way midsummer can.

Weather figures are typical long-term climate averages (climatestotravel.com / weather-and-climate.com), not a forecast — any given May can run warmer, cooler or wetter.

Terrace season is real

May is when the city starts living outside. Long lunches and café terraces feel like a natural part of the itinerary.

Parks are at their best

Green spaces are vivid and comfortable for long loops — one of the easiest highlights of the month.

Best month for walking routes

No summer heat, plenty of daylight. Perfect for Old Town details and boulevard strolls.

What's on in May

Open-air city life

May is when Bucharest fully lives outdoors. Café terraces are in full swing, the parks are busy with locals, the boating lakes in Cișmigiu and Herăstrău are open, and Calea Victoriei is pedestrianised on summer weekends as "Strada deschisă" — a relaxed, car-free promenade with pop-up events. It is the city at its most sociable.

International Museum Day & Night of Museums

Around mid-May the city marks International Museum Day (18 May), and the popular Night of Museums — a May Saturday when many museums open late into the night, often with free or reduced entry and special programmes. Exact participation and dates are set each year, so check the official listings if it falls during your trip; it is a wonderful, lively way to see Bucharest's collections.

Festival season begins

Late spring kicks off Bucharest's outdoor events calendar — music, food, film and street festivals appear through May and into summer. Line-ups and dates change every year, so check what is on for your specific dates rather than relying on a fixed schedule.

Peak day-trip weather

May is one of the best windows for a rail day trip while the mountains are green and not yet crowded: Sinaia for Peleș Castle (around 1h30 by train) or Brașov and Bran in Transylvania (around 2h15+). Note that Bran and Peleș castles shift to their longer high-season hours from around the start of May — ideal for a comfortable day out.

What to pack for May

Light layers for evenings.
Comfortable shoes (May is a walking month).

May questions, answered

What is the weather like in Bucharest in May?

Warm and comfortable — among the best of the year. Daytime highs average around the low-to-mid 20s°C with mild nights near 10°C. Expect mostly pleasant, sunny weather with the occasional quick shower or afternoon thunderstorm, so pack a light rain layer alongside summer clothes.

Is May a good time to visit Bucharest?

It is arguably the best month, along with September. The weather is ideal for walking and terraces, daylight is long, the parks are at their lush peak, and the heavy summer heat has not yet arrived. It is prime season, so it is a little busier and pricier than the shoulder months, but the conditions are hard to beat.

What festivals and events happen in May?

May marks International Museum Day (18 May) and the popular Night of Museums, plus the start of the outdoor festival season (music, food and street events). Programmes and exact dates change every year, so check the official listings for your specific travel dates.

What should I pack for Bucharest in May?

Mostly warm-weather clothing — light layers for cooler evenings, comfortable shoes for a walking-heavy month, sunglasses for bright park days, and a light, packable rain layer for the occasional shower or thunderstorm. You will rarely need anything heavier.

Are the parks and terraces open in May?

Fully. Terrace season is in full swing, and the parks are at their best — Cișmigiu Gardens and Herăstrău / King Mihai I Park are green and lively, with boating lakes and waterfront cafés open. Long park loops and terrace coffees are among the easiest highlights of the month.

Is May good for a day trip from Bucharest?

Excellent — it is peak day-trip weather. The mountains are green and not yet busy, and trips to Sinaia (Peleș Castle, ~1h30) or Brașov and Bran (~2h15+) are very rewarding. The big castles switch to longer high-season hours around the start of May, so check current times and book ahead for weekends.

Will Bucharest be crowded in May?

Busier than the shoulder months but rarely overwhelming. Weekends, the early-May holiday period and festival dates are the busiest, so reserve accommodation and popular restaurants in advance — but the city stays far more relaxed than it can feel in high summer.
